Approximately one quarter of the fish populations within the United States are either overfished or reaching dangerous levels. This is due to a variety of reasons including unsustainable fishing methods, such as bottom trawling which can destroy the fragile ecosystems along our seafloor – many of which took hundreds or even thousands of years to establish. Unsustainable fishing practices also include catching too many of a species of fish too quickly or juveniles which have not yet reached their full reproductive potential – both of which can lead to overfishing which can take an excessively long time from which to recover or perhaps eradicate an entire species of marine life. Any time this happens, we are not only depleting a certain species of fish, but the food supply for other species in the food chain and humans many times humans as well. As a society, it is our responsibility to evaluate our behavior at sea and the subsequent impact it may have on our treasured aquatic environment. We need to determine what is harmful and how we can adjust our conduct on the water accordingly. To protect our oceans and other waterways, we need to minimize our impact on aquatic habitats by fishing responsibly. We can do that by harvesting only targeted species, putting healthy limits on what we catch and leaving the waters the way we found them. This means fishing without disrupting the sea floor and being careful not to leave anything behind when we fish, like garbage or discarded fishing line which can tangle up and injure or kill marine life. The fishing gear you choose matters too. For instance, Stayput Shallow Water Anchors provides tested and true anchoring systems that aid hook-and-line fisherman in their efforts to target fish and its innovative design keeps boats securely in place, unlike big, bulky anchors which may tear loose, drag along and potentially damage the seafloor. The proprietors of Stayput Shallow Water Anchors also advocate for fishermen through their support of Captains for Clean Water, which fights to protect our ocean for the fisherman and families today and the future.
